After owning this boat for a couple of years I can say that I'm very happy with it's sea keeping and sailing abilities. But the one thing that really really bugs me about it is the fact that, the cockpit sides where not carried all the way back to the transom.

This isn't a problem when running or reaching but when your beating into any seas and taking water on board your ass is going to get wet should you be sitting at the back. That little 1/2" lip on the back doesn't stop anything.

I will be epoxying a wooden extension block that will direct the water all the way back and over the side, unless someones got another solution that's worked for them.

I suspect this is one of the differences between the earlier deck mould and the '83 and later version. I have never experienced this issue with my boat. I was trying to look at some photos to see a difference. I was on Jose Guidera's site and it seems like the cockpit combing is different at the stern from mine. Mine seems to wrap around at a bit higher up back at the transom. Sorry I don't have a clearer picture.

By "sitting at the back" I assume you mean the lazarette seating abaft the wheel. Solution - don't sit there. Lousy place from which to drive a boat efficiently to windward.

Jim the 79 isn't like that, the side terminates about 4 inches before the transom. No matter I'll modify it to prevent it from migrating along the back.

Sandpiper it's one of my favorite spots to sit so that's not an option, regardless of efficiency.

It's interesting though that they did change the deck molds, makes me wonder if it was one of the reasons.

2 suggestions:

Try not to heel so much.

If it is just spray, sew a lee cloth for the life-lines.

I have just lived with it for the past 35 years. It is annoying.

Blaise this site needs a "Like" button for comments. I sail in the same waters as you so putting up with it means cloths that don't dry because of saltwater, and there's nothing worse than a wet sea ass. Simple fix when I get back to the island.
