OK, so I've babbled on about how I maintain my Jabsco heads. Well, Peggy maintains just lube 'em and replace 'em. Here are even more reasons to Obey Peggy. I have two Jabsco manual heads. Three-years ago, I replaced the pumps with new ones that are second (current) generation. One pump cover began leaking recently, about four months after it was disassembled for lubrication. The screw studs on the pump housing all cracked at the base. My first thought was that I had somehow over-torqued the screws. However, I know better after many years. This is my first experience, however, with the second-generation pumps. What is interesting is the fracturing around each base that appears to be flex-fatigue related. Moral: replace the whole head, or the pump assembly (almost a wash in dollars). The second thing is that the same head that had the pump go out also had a base crack. An argument for replacing the entire head. Another reason to Obey Peggy. I Will Obey Peggy. Rick D.

I Agree Rick ......................

............ if you take the cover plate off of the pump body, you stand an excellent chance of the thing leaking ............. and once it leaks, it's game over. I now lubricate mine only when the piston ring really starts to stick. I've had good luck (three years lubrication) with plumber's grease which is a silicone grease. These heads are really not contructed to be taken apart more than once or twice before the threads strip or split. Regards, s/v Island Hunter

Just about right Ralph

Ralph: I would also agree with your assessment. Jabsco heads are a PIECE-OF-S**T. Got one about 2 years ago and it started acting up. Greased it, had to open it once. Then about 3-4 months later the thing would NOT suck up the raw water. Opened it again. Then the screw holes stripped out. I'm now going to try the Raritan PHII, it can be converted to electric but still be used manually. Found it at On-Line Marine for $210.

Amen, Steve ........................

............ probably the best solution to any problem with a Jabsco head is to GET A DIFFERENT TYPE OF HEAD ! Regards, s/v Island Hunter
