one cold machine cooling two adjacent boxes

I own a Tayana 52, built in 1989. The factory installed two adjacent boxes that are well insulated. One box is aproximately 3.5 cu ft and the adjactent box is about 6 cu ft. I have a very old Cold Machine cooling the smaller box and we have used the second box as an ice box. The old machine is in death throws, nearly out of (I'm told) non replaceable gas. I understand that the new Waeco-Cold Machine with a large evapaorator can cool up to 15 cu ft. If I cut two holes between the adjacent boxes with (properly screened) small 12V fans in them for an exhaust and intake fan that would be wired into the evaporator (to run when the condensor does) could I effectively cool both boxes? What are the plusses and minuses of this if it would work.

Sounds like what I have..

..in my 2002 H410. The evaporator is in the freezer compartment. There is a 2-1/2 inch round opening near the top of the common wall with a small fan in it that pulls cold air into the refrigerator box. There is a dial type control in the freezer box that regulates the evaporator compressor and a similar control in the fridge that regulates the fan. There is also a similar sized opening at the bottom of the common wall with no fan, but with a pivoting flap to close it off. With the flap open we have unintentionally frozen stuff at the bottom of the fridge section so the flap is now mostly closed. The flap also allows melt water (when you defrost, etc. to reach the drain that is in the bottom of the fridge compartment. This drain is plugged with a rubber drain stopper except when defrosting. This all seems to work fine. Note that the evaporator and the fan run independently, with the fan pulling cold air into the fridge as needed, and the freezer control determing when the evaporator runs. Overall you sound like you are on the right track with what you suggest. Good luck.
