Help me settle an argument...does it matter if I use "on" or "off" road diesel fuel on the boat?

Road tax does not apply to boaters.

Tom: You can use any diesel or synthetic fuel in your boat. The argument is probably regarding the fuel that truckers run in their rigs. If they do not use fuel that has paid road tax they will pay a fine.

Red dye, high sulfur

Off-road diesel has red dye to catch truckers and farmers using it on the road. It traditionally has a higher sulfur content. Some suppliers now use the same low-sulfur product for both on and off road, except for the dye. Ask your supplier. We call for a truck to come by the marina when several of us need fuel. They deliver the red low-sulfur product and charge 30-40 cents less than the street pump price. The local rep told me the tax difference is about 50 cents per gallon. Perhaps someone can elaborate on the implication of high-sulfur content to engine performance and life. Is it just an air quality issue?

High Sulfur V Low Sulfur

The sulfur has been reduced to ruduce the air pollution. There should be no real impact on the engine performance. In CA this was a big issue when we made the change to CARB Diesel. There was an issue with the lubricity of the fuel and the rings in the injectors. However, there was never any major problem that I can recall. As far as the red diesel as everyone else has mentioned the red is for off-road so there are no road taxes included in the price. It shold be cheaper but its not in most areas.

I use #2 heating oil in my boat and car. Have been doing so for 15 years.

there is no difference

in the octane so-to-speak.. It's in the dye.. If it's colored red when Johnny stabs a stick in your truck or car tank in CT, then you'll have a problem. I don't know about other states, but thats Connecticuts guides. Other than that, you can use heating oil, kerosene, dyed diesel or regular diesel.. Their all at about the same grade of fuel and your deisel motor will always run.
