Has anyone had any experiences, good or bad, with On Line Marine (onlinemarine.com)?

A thought

I've not dealt with them so I can't begin to describer any actual experience, but it seems to me that a site called ONLINEmarine.com would have a shopping cart system, which is the cornerstone of ecommerce. They're fairly to easy to obtain these days. An ecommerce site w/o a cart doesn't seem to be a very serious effort, to me.

OK, so no shopping cart, but a hell of a well-organized Web site which, as a webmaster, I would certainly consider a serious effort. A site carrying that much inventory would actually require a sizeable investment for a shopping cart! Oh, and I did order something from them once, no problems.

Not to wander off into webmaster stuff...

Yes, it is a very nice site and the inventory is quite well organized, no question. But if they have their inventory in a database, which I assume they must, a shopping cart system that can handle maybe 20,000 products is not a big investment at all. Certianly not for a site calling itself onlinemarine.com... Heck, our forum database is *a lot* bigger than that and we're serving on some wimpy Macs. :) Point well taken, but I still think if you're going to bill your company as an e-tailer, you'd better have some form of e-tailing infrastructure.

I know the fellow that started onlinemarine. He had a short stint in the boat brokerage business and I he had the 89Hunter 30 I now own listed. I tried to contact him through the web site and never got a reply. I still don't think you can beat Defender or West Marine and both are "on line" marine stores...

Way off the thread

Phil/George As long as he keeps beating West Marine and Defender by 10% I don't care if he never gets a shopping cart. For $25 I will pick-up the phone and dial an 800 number any time. Russ

Agree with both

Agreed that a shopping cart would help with consumer confidence. As a non-shopping-cart business owner, however, I can understand why they maybe holding off for a while (without going into discussions of the options available to a business and their relative expenses). But I also agree that competitive pricing and great service offsets that lack to a great extent. I can personally attest to that.

10% less? How about 50% less?

I bought a pair of davits for $529 from Online that West wanted $1000+tax for. The margins at West Marine and Boat/US are ridiculous. If Home Depot or WalMart carries it, its typically 1/3-1/2 the price. I bought some Apollo ball valves, the VERY SAME ONES, for 1/3 of West's price (and yes, I do know the difference between bronze balls seated in teflon vs. brass) from a plumbing supply store. I would LOVE to see some real competition to West, even though they have otherwise been a good retailer.
