I will be getting my new sailboat in the Spring,and I will be trailering to destinations primarily in New England/New York. I'm wondering which way to go,either a PC based nav system like Maptech,or a GPS based system,like Garmin. I used a Garmin E-Trex and paper charts last season,but we sailed a fairly limited area. My concern with the Garmin system,with "unlock codes" is that every couple of weeks I will be buying another area,as the segments are somewhat limited. I have a full set of Maptech waterproof for New England,and my GPS,but I would like to have "real time "positioning while we are underway. I'm not "electronically challenged",but I would like a fairly easy system to use. Which way do I go??

Look at the garmin 192c
check out the garmin 192c and its relatives. it came out of the box with all coastal detail charts loaded. it DOES NOT have the canadian coast of the great lakes area. when i sailed there i had to purchase another card ($150). it has a wealth of information and is as easy to use as others. redfish

I have to say...your awesome. I downloaded some of the charts and the free chart viewer. I love it. I had to run out to the truck and get my labtop and am now installing it on there. I know why they give a free viewer...because they know we will get addicted and pay for the ability to hook up our GPS to it so we can see where we are at. Good business idea.

Garmin 192
One thing not mentioned, the 192 is already being superceded and the price is dropping (at least at WM). Its also a lot more waterproof and energy efficient than a laptop, as we found out.
