Olga, Orcas Island

Hunter Passage 42 Shelter Bay, WA
The admiral and I were away for an early season sail through the islands. We had left Pelican Beach earlier, crossed Bellingham Channel, and had just passed through Pevine Pass under sail.

Several years ago we enjoyed a two hour transient moorage at the Olga dock to tour the old General Store above the dock followed by a short walk up the hill to a very rustic restaurant and book store where fresh homemade apple pie ala-mode awaited.

We fondly remember that visit, so I suggested we try it again. So a hard turn to starboard then a mile or three to the Olga dock. After securing Belle-Vie we take the short walk up the ramp to the store, only to find that it is closed. No gas, no food, no nothing. Just an empty building.

Okay, so apple pie it is. As we walk up the road I hail a passerby in a car for a query. They advise us that the restaurant burned down a year or so ago and the owners moved their business to East Sound. Darn. Thank you for saving us the walk to nowhere.

Blind Bay on the north end of Shaw Island was our anchorage for the night. Lots of room, good holding and reasonable protection from southerlies. We thought about taking the dinghy over to the General Store for some ice cream, but perhaps next time. We settled in for a nice evening of dinner and a movie.
