Older Honda Outboard

I found a 10 HP Honda BF100 long shaft for sale near me. It has a serial #160xxxx and will only fire if some gas is poured into the carb. Asking $400. The owner states that is has less than 50 hours on it and has a new water pump impeller installed. It looks like most parts are available for it including the carburetor assembly for about $140 if needed. Are these older Honda motors okay or should I stay away. I have been looking at mostly used 6 HP Johnson/Evinrude or Mercury motors because of parts availability and lower initial investment. My 8HP Mariner needs parts that are not available. Part of my concern for the Honda is that it is a previous generation four stroke therefore might need more maintenance (valve adjustment) and be less reliable than two strokes of the same vintage. I will repair myself if purchased as I am mechanically inclined. It weighs 77 lbs compared to 64 lbs for my Mariner.

I agree with Steve. Most four stroke issues are due to the carb. We had a loooong discussion with one skipper on thsi forum a few weeks ago. He reported that his engine wouldn't work very well, so everyone told him to take the carb apart. A few pages and a week later he finally did, and it now works!

Good luck.

I had a 7.5 HP version (BF 75) many years back ..Great engine. That one has electronic ignition .. I would check the valve clearance just for grins and pull and clean out the carb .. There were some corrosion issues if used in salt water, but probably not an issue there.

Thanks for the comments. I may go look at it. Is there anything specifically to look for in a motor that does not run? I know by pulling on the starter rope will help determine if it has compression. Doing the same in forward and reverse should give an indication if the lower unit is good. I will get a visual on the crankcase oil. Anything else?
