Can anyone tell me what the term “cockroaching” means?

(Hint: more likely used by locals and liveaboards at marinas)

Pattern of boat owners moving from one marina to another?

I was wondering if @yappasailing was referencing the trailing from one marina put in to the next and grabbing the best slip locations as they come available.

But the beer theory works also.

Maybe it refers to what some of us call "sneak aboards." Those living aboard full time but without permission to do so and in violation of the marina's rules. Perhaps a marina manager is making dock rounds looking for sneak aboards, the drums beat and the errant boaters go "cockroaching" tout suite.

I like @nightowle 's definition. My first thought was removing all cardboard packaging from groceries to get rid of any roach eggs.

Back in the late 1970’s, at the marina where I was renting a slip, there was a sailboat on the same dock that had a flag with an insignia of a cockroach on it, flying from the mast. When I asked about the flag, the sailor said, “when someone went out for a lengthy cruise or crossing, but retained the lease, he would pull into their vacated slip.” He called it “cockroaching.”

I later found out that the sailor that was cockroaching had permission from the lessee to use the slip.

When we got to Auckland, NZ we knew no one and had no idea of where to find a slip as we were told (conversation between boat and dock) all the slips were private. With no other recourse we motored up and down the docks until we found an open one with the lines hanging in the water and full of growth. Pulled in and spent our time in Auckland (about 6 months) in that slip rent free, as the owner of the slip was having a new boat built. And we made a friend who gave us the grand tour of Auckland and let us take hot showers.
If you are a real cruiser and like me, a long, hot, fresh water shower is the best gift a dirt dweller has to offer us in a new port. These days, a decent size watermaker and a hot water heater are a must. Maybe not long, but a hot, fresh water shower any time, at anchor or at sea, makes cruising so much more comfortable.
