old flax

the nut on my stuffing box was just about bottumed out...years of tightening ot minimize drip...bpught a flexible flax remover with a steel pig tail on the end...i screwed and screwed...but was unable to remove any old flax...felt like i was hitting steel...i ended up just putting a new piece of teflon impregnated flax in...would like to have removed the old (if it is there) ...has anyone else experienced this..schaefer

Just did my 37.5

First time since I bought the boat. There was only 1 piece in there. I kept digging, and digging but that's all.I replace with 3, tightened and so far, so good.

flax get'em out

I managed to obtain one of those dental instruments that my dentists uses for "probing" - has a slight hook to it. I easily managed to get a good bit of the old flax out. Jim McCue
