Auto Helm
I am in a similar situation. I have a 1989 38 CC and my autohelm is old, but it still works. It will not interphase with anything else I own, but that OK for now. I really want a "below the deck" unit. A 20,000# boat is kind of on the edge with the "wheel" models. But, like you say, they are pricey and the instalation is much more involved.Even though I would like to go cruising for extended periods, I have to face reality. I am only going away for the weekend or maybe a couple of 1 week cruises each season. An AutoHelm 6000 will work fine for that. I do have a friend who installed a "below the deck" unit and he is very happy. The main differance is you go as straight as an arrow. They actually "learn" your boat and how it steers each time you use it. (I gues it has a software package?) You don't get those "S" courses you will see in a following sea or in wind over 15 knots on a wheel unit. But, unless you have deep pockets, you have to look at the way you use your boat.Chester
