My friend just bought a 336. I really like the layout for my family. I am worried about the speed. I've raced against a new 27 and it was really slow with the new hull. Is the 336 as fast as the '84 31' that I have?? Thank you.

Please

It is not a sin to want speed and some comfort. I would like to know about the boat by somebody who owns one. By the way...it was more than 2 knots difference. Thanks.

Racing means going to windward

I doubt that Hunter hull shapes are optimized for the windward sailing that makes a good racer. But the one h34 we know - a sister model of your 31 - is one of the most weatherly Hunters we have seen. So it might be hard to find one that will point like yours. But boat speed has a lot to do with the selection and cut of your sails, and even more to do with the skill of the skipper. I bet the new hunters do very well with the right sails, especially if you are on the reaching courses that are more typical of cruising. Of course if you are seriously racing, your will have a phrf handicap for your model. And I understand that the current team at Hunter, Henderson and others, have given the new series good lines for speed. We were very happy with the sailing speed of the Hunter 340 we chartered in the North Channel. But we also loved the fractional rig, the furling main, the arch, and the cockpit. David Lady Lillie

Thanks

Thanks to you all. We are not serious into racing, but it is fun to move along with my friends. We are looking at an Islander 36 along with the 336. I like the room of both...but the swimm platform is really nice for the kids. Thanks again.

Google Sail Calculator Pro v3.5 and work up a comparisonof the boats you want to look at. I'd asume the 33 Henderson is as close as you will get to the new 336, which based only on sail area and weight should be faster than the older 31, particularly if the 31 is a shoal draft in cruising trim. HOWEVER, If you have a deep keel 31 with decent mainsail, folding prop and a 155% genoa you might surprise some newer 33's, particularly if they have a 4'-6" wing keel, a furling main and a 3 blade prop. For a realistic comparison racing, look at the PHRF ratings of similar boats in your area with the keel and sail sizes yu expect to use.
