I've been unable to use my DVD ROM drive. I get this message from Device Manager

Windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damaged. (Code 19)

I've reloaded the driver several times and still get the same message
I went to the Microsoft website and they say to reload the driver or tweek the registry. When I go into regedit I don't find what they are asking for (however the text says it's for Vista but also works for Windows 7) I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate.

Ideas welcome.

Find the DVD installation software. It will need to re-write your registry. Then you shouldn't have a problem. If you do not have the original installation software, you might be able to find it on the laptop manufacture website. The other possibility is to reload you operating system, but that will remove all your files and programs. That should be as a last resort.

Thanks Brian for the reply. I didn't install the drivers from the media shipped with the drive because Windows took care of it automatically. Windows also says it's up to date, but also shows the error message I showed earlier. I'm now copying the installation disk onto a flash drive so I can access it from the faulty computer. After all it's the DVD drive that has failed.

I still don't know if the media from LG is compatible with Windows 7 or not. Often they won't be because Windows already comes with compatible drivers. I'll know soon I hope.

OK I managed to open the manual from the DVD that shipped with the drive. It says no driver software is required because it's resident in Windows. Unfortunately my reg is corrupt. This is pretty high end hardware running an AMD FX 8 core processor, but I don't think hardware has anything to do with it. I built it only a couple of months ago. It's worked great until the last week or so.

Ken, if you have enough money to own and operate a sailboat I suggest you either buy a new PC or even better, buy a Macbook. My days of screwing around with the Windows registry are long gone...

Ken, it is not the drivers that is the issue. It is the actual install that went bad. And don't let the Mac guys try and tell you differently, they have just as many issues as Windows users.

Anyway, find the installation (not the drivers) disk and reinstall the DVD software. Again, that should fix the issue.

If it would help, what is the name of the PC and what is the name of the DVD player. I can help you find the installation software.

Thanks for the reply Brian

The PC is a home built machine . I'm running an AZUS M5A97 LE R2.0 motherboard with an AMD FX8320 8 core 3.5 ghz processor with 16 MB cache and a Nvidia Geforce GTX760 video card. The DVD drive is an LG GH24NS95 which has no installation software. It worked out of the box with the Windows 7 ultimate. The installation software that came with the drive is for authoring software only. It's been working well for a couple of months. As I said earlier the Microsoft website hasn't been of much help.

I am sure you already tried this:

1. Click Start.
2. Click Run.
3. In the "Open" field type REGEDIT.
4. Click OK.
5. Click "File" in the menu bar.
6. Click "Export" from the drop down menu this will open a new box.
7. Click the down arrow beside "Save In" and select "Local Disk (C".
8. In the File Name field type BACKUP.REG.
9. Verify that under the “Export Range”, that the radio button is beside "All".
10. Click Save.
11. Click the plus sign (+) beside HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
12. Click the plus sign (+) beside System.
13. Click the plus sign (+) beside CurrentControlSet.
14. Click the plus sign (+) beside Control.
15. Click the plus sign (+) beside Class.
16. In the left hand window pane click on {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} to select that key.
17. In the right hand window pane select the UpperFilters registry key and press the delete key on the keyboard.
18. Confirm with an OK.
19. In the right hand window pane select the LowerFilters registry key and press the delete key on the keyboard.
20. Confirm with an OK.
21. Click the "X" in the upper right hand corner of the Registry Editor window to close it.

One other option that might work is not to in to device manager and delete the DVD. Then reboot the machine and Plug & Play will detect new hardware. From there it will automatically load and hopefully it will work.

I think the above instruction is doing the same thing. If that key does not match you can do a search in the regedit for LG GH24NS95 and it should find the correct key.

OK I got it

Thanks guys.
I did a system restore to 4 days ago and the drive recovered. The only thing I could see that had changed was my son re-installed ITunes for his phone.

Life is good. Now if the weather would cooperate so I could go sailing.
