ok, now the head...

I'm making my way through this Hunter 31, slowly but surely. I got to cleaning the head this weekend - and - the head isn't pumping water when set on "wet bowl." What are the possibilities here for what's wrong?

There are several possibilities

Here are the easy ones:

Is the seacock open?

Could the thru-hull be blocked?

Could the holes in the bowl rim be calcified (blocked)?

Has the unit been modified to flush with freshwater from the holding tank?

How does the pump behave in each position?
Does it carry waste away in the "pump dry" position?
Do you encounter a lot of resistance in the "wet bowl" position?

Others my think of more things to check, but my guess is that if it isnt one of the above and you arent getting a lot of resistance to pumping in the wet bowl position, there are blown seals/flaps in the pump assembly.

For inexpensive manual toilets, it's often more cost effective to replace it than to try and rebuild it.

What is the make/model/age of the toilet?

And what's the boat's recent history...has it been dry stored or been sitting unused for an extended period?

Depending upon your answers, the fix could be a simple inexpensive one...or it could make more sense to replace the toilet.

Head

First thung to do is close the intake sea-cock and then remove the intake hose from it. Now, slowly open the sea-cock to ensure that water does come in. Then remove the hose from the head and look down it to see if it is blocked or clear. If the hose and water flow are good then follow Peggie's and primerese's last suggestions and replace the head.
P.S. thanks for the lead on that new winch. I'll be checking winches out when the boat shows start.

Not necessarily Mac...

It could be a simple as replacing a flapper valve...which is why I asked him the make/model/age of the toilet and whether the boat had been sitting for a while.

The boat did sit unused for a period of time..so I'm just trying to get things moving again! And yes- I looked around on the internet- the seacock was closed. I opened it - and voila- water! I put some tank cleaner in.. then some vinegar..to help get things cleaned out. I don't know when this boat's really been pumped out and thoroughly cleaned.. so I'm thinking I'll take and do a pump out next- just to be sure.

We knew you could do it!

These were great boats. Once you get all the kinks worked out you will be fine. I owned my 1985 H'31 since it was new. We had very few problems other then the compression post.

The head, bilge pump, water pump, water heater and associated systems are all maintenance items.
