On my 29.5 after sitting for a few days I start the engine and it will kick out a small amount of black smoke and a black residue like oil (but not oil) on the water behind the boat. The exhaust has been cleaned out but never a major tuneup. After it starts it runs very well. Just went to Catalina and had no problems at all. Just that small black film on the water. Any Help???

had the same problem kinda

I have a 2gm Yanmar that did something similar, I discovered that black film on the water that looks like carbon, is unburnt desiel fuel. However, in my case, the engine ran very rough. I too cleaned out the exhust elbow, no joy. After a lot of head scratching I asked a smart guy and he told me to bled the fuel lines. He was right the cause was a leak in the fuel system (loose nut on an injector). Fuel injected engines don't like air in the fuel lines. Maybe you should bled the lines, takes about 10 minutes and start her up. I would also recommend you buy a copy of Nigle Calder's book on Marine Desiel engines. It has already saved me about $200 in 4 months. Hawii Dan Illusions

A small quantity of uburnt diesel may be involved

What's been sitting in the muffler/silencer since you last used the engine tends to be also involved, and is pretty much the case with most diesels on start-up if they've been sitting idle for a while. Can never hurt to bleed the fuel lines if air in the fuel system is suspected though...
