I have a 2002 356 with a Yanmar GM30. For the first time ever I am getting a small puddle of black engine oil under the engine after approx 6 hours of constant operation @ 2800 rpm. The oil level is down only about 1/4 cup or less. This just started happening during the past 2 week when we have had to use the diesel for long periods to run 6 kts. Is this typical or anything to worry about. I never had this happen last sailing season. We typically run the engine a few hours on most days and we are pretty much on the water every day all summer.

you shouldn't be leaking any oil. try to find out where it's coming from. We had a similar very small drip from under the front engine cover. Have you changed your oil? I've heard that the GM30 may be more prone to leaks if the oil hasn't been changed regularly. Also, a leak/spill around the oil filter may drip down under the center of the engine.

My 2GM20F leaks at the timing cover (front cover just behind and below the alternator belt) You can search this forum for my post with pictures. See if it is same location as yours. I'm planning to remove the cover next month to change the gasket. Not a simple job ...for me, but will try.

Look carefully at the external oil line connections. Port side block to cylinder head. then check the other easy ones like oil filter, and oil pressure switch. Make sure the breather hose is connected to the breather box and the intake manifold..

Try to find the source of the leak. Check the oil lines for rust, a pinhole in a rusted line can grow real quick into a major problem. Once you identify the source of the leak then you can judge wether it requires immediate attention or not.
