Hey I'm sure someone can help me out with this question. I have purchased a 15 hp Merc. Mariner engine from a client of mine. He bought the engine for a standby tender he never used. This engine has never been run from what I can determine. Is the fuel ratio mix 50:1 on this engine? Does this engine require a 25:1 mix for break-in as some other engine are required? Any other "quirks" or suggestins regarding these engines? Thanks guys, Tim

Get the manual from Merc

Every outboard I have owned used the 50:1 ratio, and the new Nissan I just bought required the use of 25:1 during a break in period. However the only way to know for sure is to get the owner's manual. I bet Merc has them posted on line or at least available for a small fee. Its worth it.

YES

I have a new 5hp Merc and the manual states run a 2x oil mix for the first tank.

Fuel Oil Gas Mix Ratio for Outboard Engine

Tim There's a missing link in your question. What year is the engine? Are we to assume it is an older standard two stroke, where you mix the oil and gas in the gas tank? That's important, because the newer two strokes don't. If my guess is correct that it is an older engine, then 50:1 is the answer. Certainly wouldn't hurt to use more oil in the first tankful. You could also call a local dealer and ask them, in addition to the recommended search on the website (if they have any stuff left over from older engines). Good luck, Stu

Try this site -

There is an excellent website that covers just about every outboard motor ever made - past or present. Go to - iboats.com - and look up your information re manuals, fuel etc. Cheers,

I believe

That the smaller Mariner engines were built by Yamaha. The oil ratio for the Yamaha is 100:1 and the break-in tank is 50:1.
