Maybe someone can help me clear up a issue with oil filters, I posted as note about possible going to and needed a number for the fram filter to fit my 3gm30f. I got a lot of feed back about not using anything but yanmar filter. I recently changed my oil and filter the old filter was a yanmar 119660-35150 (silver colored) the new one was also a yanmar 119660-35150 but was just a bit larger in size and black in color. Did yanmar change them ? I installed it and it doesn't leak however the filter seams oversize. Any body have any thoughts? I was looking for the Fram equivalet for comparison. Thanks for all your help!

various oil filters

I have used Fram, WIX, and NAPA filters with no apparent difference. NAPA also carries the fuel tank filter insert and belts (Gates) used on my boat. The only filter I need to get from Yanmar is the engine fuel filter.

Fram oil filter

I just changed mine prior to Fall layup and replaced the Fram with another Fram. As with the other response, the only Yanmar item I have had to purchase is the fuel filter, bought through the shop store.

I was advised by Mack Boring to not use a fram oil filter instead of the Yamar. Something about the yanmar being constructed to a higher oil pressure standard. There are two Yanmar oil filters; one being about twice the size of the other. Both will fit but you should use the one designed for you motor. They should not be interchanged. This advise was given me once again by Mack Boring.

Fram's work Ok

My our friends 340's at our Marina in the Great Lakes have used the Fram filters without any problems at all. I also like the fact that I buy them for $2.99 and they also fit my Honda! Chris/ Hunter 340 Festina Tarde #107

torreson marine

I am a new hunter/yanmar owner and purchase all parts from torreson marine via email. They get correct parts to me in 2-3 days, a great source of advice, and very customer service oriented. Chris

Don't use Fram Oil Filters on Yanmar engines

Here is the deal on using non-Yanmar oil filters. Years ago Yanmar had a problem with the oil pressure sending unit. It was placed ahead of the oil filter and would gunk up and give false low pressure warnings. To fix this problem Yanmar Engineers moved the filter ahead of the sending unit and hence the sending unit know sees only filtered oil. Problem solved right ?? By doing this they also moved the filter ahead of the oil pressure requlator and hence the filter in now on the high pressure side of the regulator. All oil filters, Fram and Yanmar have pressure relieft valves built in. (Take one apart and you will see a button on the top that you can press to open). This valve is there to provide a flow by in the event the filter is clogged. (ie. You don't change it enough). Fram filters are built for applications in which the filter is on the low pressure side of the oil pressure requlator. (This is the case with most engines, diesle and gasoline). With a Fram filter on a Yanmar engine the pressure valve will stay open and you will have, in effect, no oil filter. You will not see any effect from this, looks like it fits, dosn't leak, etc. but no filtering is taking place. Yanmar filters are designed with a higher pressure releif valve. Extra costs sucks but I'll take filtered oil over non at any cost.
