Hello. I am new to sailing and I have just purchased an O'Day 31 with a universal M18. I need to change the oil in it so does anyone have any suggestions on what type of oil to use and any helpful hints to make this process go smoothly. Thanks for any help

Check the link below for a general rundown. You'll need less oil than in the example and you can get away with a less expensive pump. Lots of recommendations for pumps on the ask all sailors site. I just use a Jabsco Par hand pump and pump the old oil into used 1 gallon water bottles. Just be sure to have some rags and paper towels for cleaning up drips and spills.
There is a lot of negativity about the Fram filters so you might want to check out some other brands. Wix seems to get good reviews if you don't want to use the Universal OEM filter. The Kubota is a natural choice too because it is really a Kubota tractor engine.

Sometimes a drain pan will fit underneath the engine to drain oil into and is a better way to drain all of the used oil from the engine, however if a drain pan will not fit underneath the engine a pump will have to be used. The hose for the pump is inserted into the dipstick hole. Warm the engine up before you remove the old oil. I recommend Rotella oil for your diesel engine. Start by putting about one quart of oil into the engine and recheck the level several times as you fill to the correct level. Be careful not to overfill. Overfilling can lead to engine damage. Run the engine for about five minutes and then recheck oil level.
I believe they all came stock with a dedicated oil drain hose as shown in the picture in the attachment in my prior post. It is an orange hose as in the picture. M-18 looks about the same as the M-25 as far as that goes. Check out the bottom of the oil pan and you should see it and be able to trace it up. You will likely want to pump out rather than removing the hose fitting on the pan
On the Westerbeke in our O'Day 272, O'Day or someone at the factory installed the
dedicated oil pan drain hose described above...It has a brass fitting on the dedicated hose. We installed another brass fitting on the little hand pump hose which attaches to the dedicated hose from the pan so their is no mess, just pump it out and that way you get all the old oil emptied from the pan...Pat
