oil change

Just purchased 88 Legend and is time for oil change, do I need to access through the dip stick tube?

That's the usual way to remove the engine oil. Run the engine for about 15 to 20 minutes to heat up the oil to make it much easier to extract. Then use an oil extraction pump, either an electric one or a pump up vacuum extractor. Of coures my experience is on a Yanmar 2GM20F on my 1990 Hunter 33.5. I have used the Top Sider oil extraction pump. It works better if you put a about a 10 inch copper tubing on the end of the extractor vinyn tubing. That way you know when you bottom out, and can move it around some. The vinyl tubing can "curl up" at the bottom and then you are no longer at the bottom and don't get all of the oil out.

On that engine (4JH, I think), Joe, the dipstick tube goes all the way to the bottom of the pan.. you could get all the oil out by attaching to the top of the tube and extracting.. A vinyl tube inside the dipstick tube is unnecessary but ya may want to try it that way first. another option; since the tube is attached to the bottom of the pan with a banjo bolt you could put something too catch all the oil under the rear of the pan and loosen the banjo bolt and drain the oil directly into a container. without the use of a pump.

The GM series of Yanmars do not have a dipstick tube. The dipstick sticks through a hole in the side of the engine block. That hole is considerably above the oil level so a stiff tube extractor is necessary since there is no internal guide tube.
