Anyone know the oil capacity on a Yanmar 2GM20 with a filter change. I don't have my manual with me and need to buy oil. Thx

Oil Level vs. Oil Capacity ?

If the dipstick is located at the aft end, (deepest oil in the pan of an aft sloping engine), and reads 'full' before reaching the recommended capacity... which do you believe? Do I run the risk of blowing seals by overfilling to capacity recommendations and ignore the stick...or risk running low and hot by believing the stick.

Good Question

Dale asks a good question. OMO - I'd probably dis-believe the stick, and fill to specified capacity. Of course, this would require that you absolutely ensure that the block was completely empty after old oil drained. The capacity will include any oil you pre-lube' the filtre with. Other opinions ??? Liters

A liter, which is about Imperial 35.2 ozs., is less than an imperial quart (40 ozs) but more than a US quart (32 ozs). And that's not getting into the fact that Imperial and US ozs. are not the same. Just remember that 1 US qt. = .946 liter. Kevin

Split the Difference?

Just recently changed it and found that I am at the high end of the stick at around 2-to-2.5 qts on a recommended capacity around 4.5 qts.... It is not a small difference and that is the reason for my concern. I ran this '79 Yanmar by the stick last year and experienced no apparent overheating here in Florida but wonder if its all getting sufficiently lubed. (No oil pressure gage) Thank for any thoughts....besides adding the gage. ;)

Split the difference

Dale, you didn't mention if you have a drain plug or if you suck the oil out of the dipstick tube. My older Yanmar doesn't have a drain plug so when I suck out the old oil I measure how much I got out to make sure it equals the rated capacity. When sucking its always hard to keep the intake hose from sucking air and thinking you got all the oil. This also tells me that all's well with the engine; not more oil which means diesel in the crankcase and not less which means I am burning lub oil. When I have it all out I can confidently add the recommended capacity of new oil. Kevin
