Oh, Yeah

Dana has a transient anchorage that I've used. When entering, make an immediate left and follow the narrow channel with the sea wall to port. When the channel opens up, the anchorage is at the far end of the basin. Oughta be a nice day trip from Oceanside: go for it.

Just watch the depth in the corner of the anchoring area against the breakwater. And if there is going to be a large minus tide move away from the wall or you could be sleeping on an angle berore morning. Also, be prepared to walk since most eating places are several blocks away. Have a great time. Novelman

Guest slip

Or you can get a guest slip from Dana Point Marina. The cost is $1 per foot per night, and it includes electricity so bring your shore power cord. The good thing about the service is you can make a reservation up to 30 days in advance.

There are plenty of places to eat in Dana Harbor.

One of my wife's favorites is breakfast at Proud Mary's. El Toritos is reasonably priced. The rest are what one would expect at a nice restaurant with a harbor view. Stay away from the Jolly Rogers, lousy food and bad service. Another favorite is The Peking Dragon Restaurant on PCH just north of Golden Lantern, excellent gourmet food at very inexpensive prices. I've never used the guest slips there but have launched from their ramp many times. A little expensive to spend the night in their lot $20/night. If you make the trip remember to bring your binoculars for when you pass the southern end of San Onofre (clothing optional) Beach. *pop It should be a nice day sail. Frank

Moondoggy, Dude! Ya just have to do it!

I finally put my little boat in the Sound on the 4th and did some serious sailing. It was too sweet for words.

Moondoggy, I agree with the others. Its simple if, you check your weather window... Channel 2 on your VHF or marine weather, lots of info there. And when you get to Dana Point, do not despair. Hail the Harbor Patrol and say... "lead me to the anchorage!" Cheers

Moondoggy...

Head on over to West Marine on Oceanside Blvd and get a chart of Southern California. Keep the charts with you and study them. Dana Point, along with all the other harbors are in the chart package. Or you can download the charts from Free Charts dot com. There is a wealth of info available. You can also visit the Dana Point Harbor web page. They have much info there. That is if you haven't already. Enjoy the sail up to Dana Point.

Turk's, next to Proud Mary's is the locals

favorite watering hole/restaurant, just walk in and find a seat, no hostess. Lunch and dinner daily specials are a good deal and about 4000 calories, drinks are strong and cheap, and if you sit at the bar you'll hear most of the daily harbor news/gossip. There are 2 anchorages, as pointed out the west one is quietest but remote from restaurants etc. The east end is next to the fuel dock and bait barge which runs a generator all night. Since the Marina Co. started handling the transient docks it seems there are difficulties if you arrive after office hours, no one there. Can't just show up and go to the Harbor Master anymore, gotta make reservations. Also, on quiet nights it's possible to anchor just outside the harbor next to the breakwater in front of Doheny Beach.
