About 4 years ago, while experimenting , I found an additive for IG Silkenseal that made it more like a varnish and tried it on some wood. It was too yellow for use on gelcoat. My boat now needs the Teak redoing. I used to use Cetol but hate the clean-up that the artificial organge color. Anyhow, I sanded out some of the teak and used my "additive" plus Silkenseal. as a sealant- just wiped it on with paper towel (I d need to start a paper towel franchise!). Even without anti-oxidant additive (just experimenting on this right now) it has lasted about 6 weeks in the HI sun with a nice "blond" natural look. Have not put on more than the first coat. Now it is not like varnish or anything just looks like lightly oiled interior teak but is strongly water repellant. You can apply Supergalze for for more of a shine but have not tried varnish as a top-coat yet. Any interest in Beta testing anyone? This is how we developed the non-skid sealant. Now I know that we all need yet another teak treament like the proverbial hole in the head- but Hey! A small bottle of "catalyst" converts your unused Silkenseal (which lasts for years under normal use) into something with another use. I like the fact that there is water clean up. WHen set it cleans up with our cleaners and it does NOT stain the gelcoat if it is already waxed/sealed (whether or not with our products.) It is also FAST. I did a companionway door in less than an our, including the hand sanding step. Meanwhile I do not have to invest in special bottles, fancy labels etc. I would have thought this might be good for for cruisers too! If you have interest let me know!. If there is enought interest I'll generate a list and see what we can do for next Spring. Thanks Jim W
