Back to the boat today to work on that clamp again. I tried using the electric planer but no joy as it was too big to fit so it was the old school way with hammer and chisel. After we got it close, we went at it with the sander.

Notice the fitment of the new deck beams?

You can see the joins.

After we got it pretty close, it was time to make the last of that section's deck beams and fit them.

Now I have to order some fasteners and bolt that side together after measuring the spacing between the house bolts. I wouldn't want to finish everything up and find the house won't bolt up. I'm thinking of through bolting the inside ends as well instead of using screws.

I'm just wondering whether to glue the joints too. If I did, it'd be tough for the next person to replace them.

Very good progress! Check with Jay Greer over on the woodenboat forum about the glue. Your fit is so good I think that white lead bedding will be all you need with the mechanical fasteners.

Hmm, they didn't use any bedding compound when they built her. Maybe they should've...

It will keep the water out of the ends.. Locust will rot. I have a 40 year old locust chopping block that lives outside, on the ground and it is quite a bit worse for the wear.

She is a very strong and stiff boat. Maximum centers on ribs and beams are 10" at the most. The stringers are double as well. I can see why she made the Horn from East to West with ease...

on another forum plastic boats are referred to as clorox bottles. And that is the kind term that they use.

I hear ya Ross. Personally, I nothing against frozen snot boats, as some call them, I almost bought the winningest Mac65 of all time, "Joss". If I was willing to buy one 'o them, ya know I have no ill will towards glass boats.

Remember Ken Hutchens, he was building Tally Ho from trees cut and milled on site. He was nearly finished when the brain tumor killed him. Have you heard if Shirl has found anyone to complete the boat?

Charlie, Do a woodenboat search for TallyHo. A lot of good wisdom in Ken's posts.
