It's a slow hump day so here goes:
Does anyone have a clue how much it might cost to convert to inmast furling for a mid-sized boat (Hunter 280)? I have a pretty good idea of what would need to be replaced but no idea of costs.

Would cost way too much since you would need to replace the mast. You could go with an in boom furler but again way to expensive. Third option is a mast furler. CDI and Famet have them. Still pricy but certainly least costly of the three options.

If you are serious about a furling sail, you would be better off and probably more cost-effective to remove the existing boom and replace it with a furling boom sail. Cost for a 28 ft boat would be cheaper than a new mast and be around $15k - $20k

You don't need to replace the mast, a friend of mine did it on his Benny 40. You can install a trac on your current mast for the new sail.

I have a 29.5 that the PO converted to in mast furler. It is a seldom mast. The PO gave me all of the bills and it ran around 5000 bucks not counting the sail. I'm not sure what the sail cost. Works like a champ.

Interesting Sailm8. I dug around some and saw where a furling boom was ~$4.5K and that didn't include the main. Do you recall if the PO hired it all out or did he do the ordering and installation?

Clark, you might want to look around for a salvager in the New York Area. With all the boats there that were damaged, during Sandy, there could possibly be something available. Just a thought!

It was done at Sailors Wharf in St Pete FL. I don't know much more and the PO has since passed away.
