I would

As long as you have adequate safety gear, can navigate using GPS or dead reckoning, stay away from intense storms,I dont know why not.I would do it on my 28.I know many people who have crossed the gulf in less than a 30.

Why not?

I take my 290 offshore all the time. Sailed outbound from Clearwater to Key West. Drifted when the wind died, and fought through two gale force wind storms w/o ever feeling threatened... just wet. I'm thinking about going to the Bahamas this May/June. If you're comfortable with the boat, she'll do just fine. Just reef early. :)

Keith is right

If you are contemplating serious off-shore coastal cruising where you could get caught in a nasty squall or something, then I would refit her rigging if it has not been done in the last 5-7 years. According to my surveyor, the avg. life expectancy of rigging is 15 years. So you can decide from there what would need to be re-done or not. I would also replace the helm chain/wire leading to the rudder and keep a spare on board. I too would not head out without an EPIRB and all the safety/navigation trimmings... As for the length and overall age of the boat - a refit 20 year old boat is just as good as a new boat - some would argue better in certain ways.

top foot or so

I often get asked when I am sailing offshore in the Gulf of Mexico if I worry about being out in the deep water. I always answer that I only sail on the top of it. By quietly sitting and thinking about all the things that might come up and working out preparations for dealing with them, including spares, safety, manuals, communications, etc. you'll both vacinate and steel yourself. Oh, and check your insurance policy regarding offshore sailing.

I have a Hunter 34 which I know is 4ft longer than your boat but I sailed mine across the Atlantic last year from Punta Gorda, Florida to the South of France (The Med) with no major problems so I'm sure that offshore sailing in a Hunter 30 is fine as long as the boat and gear are in good condition and you are well equipped and think ahead as the weather changes. The first things on my list were a new ocean class liferaft and 406 Epirb. Also make sure your sails are in good condition and are able to be reefed easily to storm sail size. Happy sailing.

81 H-30 in Oahu

Illusions is kept on the windward side of Oahu, while the view is great the seas can be rough. We regularly sail her intra island with no problems other than getting wet from time to time. The Molokai channel is notorious for big breaking waves. I fell off the face of one a few years ago. It stranded my backstay and knocked my bow anchor loose. Lesson- stow the (*&()^% anchor and make sure your rigging is sound ( as previously mentioned). As long as she is a sound boat you will be fine. I do have a 406 EPIRB (just in case). Happy Sailing and Semper Fi! Dan Geltmacher
