Off Label Use...

As we all know there are many products that are not labeled "marine" that work very well in marine applications and often cost less. Yesterday after my brothers new 1990 FJ-62 Landcruiser was delivered I went to town on it for about a half hour. I used a marine product on a car in reverse of what we mostly think of doing.

For polishing the 21 year old paint I used the Presta Chroma polish I recommend for boats, and the blue wool Presta pad, as well as my Makita 9227C rotary buffer. This truck is almost completely un-rusted, which for a 21 year old Toyota is rare, but it spent its life in AZ and finally ended my brothers 4 year search for the right FJ. The paint is 100% original and it has never been painted..

As usual the Toyota chrome wheels rust up even in AZ. I had a bottle of On & Off Gel in the back of my car, and knowing how the stuff works and that chrome is rather resistant to acids, I gave it a whirl. We used to use acids a lot when restoring my dads antique cars to rid parts of rust.

Each wheel took about 3 minutes. I applied the On & Off Gel with a chip brush and rinsed the wheels quickly with fresh water then spritzed with a bottle of baking soda/water to neutralize any acid left and rinsed again. The gel really helps and held the acid in place while it went it work on the rust. I did not do anything other than that, no scrubbing, no polishing, no rubbing. This product is perhaps the miracle chrome wheel cleaner of the century!;)

Before:

After On & Off Gel:

This is what the Makita 9227C, wool pad and Presta Chroma did to the 21 year old red paint. This is BEFORE waxing and only one pass with the buffer and a very "quickie" job. It can look a lot better..

Even with 21 year old red paint, Makita, the blue wool pad and Presta Chroma Polish barely even touched the thickness of the paint.

Oh and to keep this "boating" related this is what I generally use On & Off Gel for:

Hi Main Sail,
Do you think On & Off would take the rust off my Atomic 4? I'd like to do some touch-ups.

Why in the world would you want to use marine products in non-marine situations? Marine stuff costs more than non-marine stuff and in my experience does not justrify its price (one exception -- Liquid BoatLife).

Use ON OFF if you want, At under 2.00 bucks a bottle Sno-Bowl toilet bowl cleaner will do the same job, and just as easy.

Another non marine product that will git her done

I'm on board with Capn Dave here. The least expensive acid base toilet bowl cleaner will work amazingly well on algae and mineral stains.

Gel Products

In my opinion gel products are worth the extra money when it comes to wheel cleaning. The best stuff I ever used was a gel spray product that SAAB sells. I was amazed at how much better the product worked with the added residence time.

Maine, you should clear coat those rims now that they are clean...although knowing you, you will likely put some wax on instead.

As far as the quickie buffing job...what else can I say except...

I agree and considering that bottle cost me about $9.00 and has lasted nearly three years I am not complaining. If you want cheap good old oxalic acid crystals are about as cheap as it gets, I've got plenty, but they are runny and the acid drips on anything and everything and the gel stays in place better. The On/Off gel is also quite powerful compared to some of the house hold products.

Do not use acids like this on aluminum. It will eat it away fairly quickly.

That is a fairly true statement! It will discolor and dull stainless and take a LOT of polishing to bring it back and to metals like bronze, aluminum or copper it's pretty tough stuff. I know from previous experience that chrome is more resistant to acids that is why I chose this stuff for use on on those wheels. As with any acid BE CAREFUL how you use it and also be very, very careful if you have Awlgrip as it can etch the surface.
