I am a first time owner of a 1981 Hunter 25 , which I live aboard , with no shore power . I look forward to asking questions to more experienced owners , and sharing my progress . Any advice is appreciated . I sailed her as I bought her , all the way around Long island without a hitch . Have done a few small repairs . Most of the work has been to make her liveable . Pretty much everything is original . Newer halyards , newer jib and sheets , and a new winch handle so far . I am on a limiting budget , but without rent or mortgage , I can put most of that into Mariah , and have so far . Love this site . Cheers, Pete ( Queens , Ny )

I don't live on my boat. Does that make me the "former"? Latter or former, we like having you here. You say limited income but it can't be cheap keeping a sailboat in Queens. And winter without shorepower?! Now that's a challenge. Good luck.

Ok, without shore power, how will you survive the winter on your 25?

The docking fee is so cheap , you wouldn't believe it . talked it over with some people , and it looks like I'm going to get a generator . I lived aboard with just diesel stove in Kodiak, Ak , winter '09 . Not that worried about it . But with generator , prob. honda 2000 , I should be set . When you don't have shore power , the docking fees are VERY low . I am going to be sailing up to Mass. early December . Just working , and putting 1/2 the money into Mariah , just trying to get more input and ideas on how to make this boat the best she can be for year round northeast cruising . One day perhaps god will grant me a nice 35 foot steel hull sloop or something , but this is what I've got . Plus, You guys have made me feel good about this particular boat

Just a comment - however limited ones budget may be, there are some things that should be done immediatley and I would count a carbon monoxide and smoke detector right at the top if you don't have them already.

After that I would deal with things like the standing rigging which looks expensive till you consider the cost and danger of a dismasting. Unfortunatley the list is endless but what I have done over the years is attend to all the things that could sink me, create a danger, or leave me stranded in a bad situation first, and do cosmetic and convenience stuff later.
