We just purchased a 98 Hunter 260 and it has developed a nasty odor coming from the water ballast. What can I do about this? Is there something I can put in the tank to kill the odor, or will I have to purge the water.

Check the archives.

Pete, There has been a lot of discussion about this on this site. I believe the general consensus is a little bleach in the ballast tank does the trick. Mark Kissel Kittiwake/98H240

W/B ODOR

THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM WITH WATER BALLAST TANKS. POUR ONE CUP BLEACH INTO THE VENT HOLE. ADD THROUGHOUT THE YEAR WHEN NEEDED.

Bleach

Yep, bleach is the answer. My 26 has been in the water since March. Added some bleach when we launched and needed only one followup treatement since then. As suggested, check archives for more details. I don't have my notes handy and I don't remember how much I used.

Bleach and Tap Water

Some bleach (about a quart) every once in a while and if available use a hose to fill it up with tap water. I guess on a lake it is not as big a deal as out here on the coast. I pull mine and change out the water about twice a year. I have been trying to think of a way to empty the tank without pulling the boat out of the water. One of the pumps on the end of a drill is about the only thing I have come up with.

Oolagah Lake

Pete; If I may digress from your post - How do you like Lake Olagah? We have only tried Stockton so far but Oolagah is about the same distance from home so we will probably check it out next year. Any recommendations on where to launch, the good, bad and otherwise? Anything to avoid etc? You can respond here or my email is gtcl@jscomm.net Thanks; Gary "Serenity"

Chlorine

For years I have put 1/2 cup or so of chlorine crystals like used in a swimming pool in my ballast tanks. Don't spill it on you blue canvas shoes as it will bleach them (I know). You can get it at any pool or hot supplier. Corky

Lots of Bleach

After finding the wonderful smell of rotting eggs the first year we had our 260, I, too, learned about bleach. I fill the ballast tank about half way, add about 10 gallons of liquid bleach, and then finish filling. Never had a problem. With 2,000 pounds of water ballast, there is about 220 gallons of water, and a lot of organisms that will grow. Using 10 gallons is about a 4% solution, which is a "shock" treatment. I use a large funnel, and it's very easy. I don't have to do anything for the entire summer. Good luck, Ray Trombino "Sand Dollar"

odor eaters

The odorific suprise you recieved is probably from leaving the ballast water in your tank for prolonged periods... Our first year of having ours in a marina resulted in me buying a new head, using incense, and sniffing around until one day I lifted the step and pulled the drain plug and nearly fell over! We now use a bottle of water bed conditoner in our tank at the start of the season and have no problems thereafter.. Good luck, Todd
