Odor - Between Liner and Hull

My 1985 Hunter 34 has an odor, primarily in the front of the boat. I have changed hoses from the head to the holding tank and that helped. I have cleaned the outside of the tank. No change. I believe the odor is coming from water trapped between the liner and the hull. The shower sump pump doesn't start untill water is up to the point where the water is flowing through the hole for the pump discharge pipe into the bilge. Water flows from the ice box into the bilge and of course the stuffing box drains through an obstical course before it gets to the bilge. How do you clean all of these apparant inaccessable areas and get rid of the odor. I prefer not to mask it with a scented bilge cleaner. All responses will be appreciated. Thanks, Charlie

A thorough cleaning!

Those areas are not as inaccessible as they seem....there are limber holes in the structural members that allow the (relatively) free passage of water. If there weren't they'd overflow. So the solution to your problem is a thorough cleaning...lots of detergent bilge cleaner allowed to slosh all over the bilge--you may even need a pressure washer to get to everyplace you need to reach, followed by a hosing out with fresh water till all the dirty soapy water is out. It might also be a good idea to re-route your icebox drain--and any others--into sumps that can be cleaned regularly a bit more easily. I keep harping on this subject...bilges are like bathtubs--they have to be cleaned--really CLEANED--from time to time, or you're gonna have a stinky boat.

Charlie odors odors

I have a 31 which is bascially the same boat. I finally discoverd my odor was coming from the hand pump for the tank discharge that is used. The diaphram had rotted out. Put a little waste in the head and look out, nose plugs needed.

Odors

Other things you can change to help with the odors are: Switch to fresh water flushing to the head, no matter haw much you clean and flush when you leave the boat for the week, the sea water in the pipes will smell. Rinse the frige drain with clean water and possibly baking soda, when fridge is drained, use a wet/dry vaccum cleaner to be sure all water is removed from the hose, pump the bilge, then vaccum the remaining water from it. After a pumpout, I rinse what I can from the hoses by putting clean water in, then pumping again, and follow with some head deodorant into the pump out fitting. Finally, I removed the screws that hold the table leg to the floor, we put some detergent and bleach mixture in the hole there,(not a lot of water) then go sailing, the detergent and bleach helps clean between the hull and liner, we then vaccum this area before leaving the boat also. This area under the table leg is where the water from the stuffing box accumulates! Best of luck J K Kudera s/v 50-50

Chlorox

Mixed Chlorox and water 50/50, placed it in a presurized (pump up) garden sprayer and after flushing all the openings sprayed the mixture in to the spaces between the lioner and hull. For a day or two it smelled like a swimming pool. Now there is no odor :) :) :)
