could someone help me identify my boat that i have recently purchased
the owner said that it is an oday 30 .. however a good friend has said it is an oday 28 .. there is no hull id on the transom and from a rough measure of loa it seemed to be 29' and the shaoe of the stern would suggest an oday 30 compared to the photos of other oday 28's and 30's

Nose,

This web site provides a plethora of information. Captain Herring and his minions provide much detailed model information. Suggest you compare model information for the O'Day 30:

http://oday.sailboatowners.com/inde...ymodel&id=123&Itemid=888&brand=Oday&bmodel=30

Compare to:

http://oday.sailboatowners.com/inde...ymodel&id=124&Itemid=888&brand=Oday&bmodel=28

AND, look at the photo galleries provided...

Does your title reference a hull I.D. or model description?

i have already checked out both of those sites ... and done the side by side compare ... unfortunatly i dont have a title for this boat .. i really should get in touch with the previous owner to see if he has it ... where i live is populated by transients and things like papers go missing all the time ... could you answer if the hull shape of the transom on the 28's was always the same and likewise for the 30's .. if the hull shape which i am sure didn't change as they would have to remould .. then i would assume it was a 30

Can you get out a tape measure and compare your numbers to the specs on the prior post?

Please Post Pictures of Your Boat

If you do, I'm sure that someone will be able to tell you what you have.

Captain Nos(e):

Are you in the USA? If yes, you will need paperwork. Is the boat Coast Guard Registered?

The hull I.D. # should be imbedded in the hull on the tansom. Hang your head over the starboard corner of the transom and look carefully. It is probably same color as adjacent area. Take small piece of white paper and use lead pencil to highlight number on paper. That is put paper against hull number and gently rub lead against hull number. That is rub lead flatwise to show number outlines. Rub sufficiently to get complete number.

The problem with riverboat gambling is that you can't tell if you're queasy from losing your money or getting seasick!

No Hull I.D. Number? No Title?
My advice is to take this boat back to ever you bought it from!!
ALL O'DAY boats built after the 1972 Model Year have Hull I.D. Numbers. The 30 was introduced for the 1977 model year and the 28 for the 1979 model year. The HIN will be molded into the outside of the transom and read like: XDYSxxxxM77A for the 30 or XDYNxxxxM79A for the 28.

ALL boats 14' and over require a Title in the USA, you will not be able to register or document the boat without a proper title and HIN.

This may very well be a stolen boat!

As to whether she is a 28 or a 30, here are a couple of pictures of the 2 boats. If you saw them hauled out, the 30 has a deeper forward entry (bow sits lower in water)
But first the official specs of each design.

in nys, depending on how old the boat is it may not have a title, but would at least use the registration from the previous owner to transfer. if you lack the registration, you must at least have a bill of sale which includes the vin number along with a pencil rub of the number. if unreadable, you may need to get the sheriff to verify the number.

even if not in the usa, i would suggest you quickly find out the requirements and get the paper work straight before the seller disappears.

looks like a great boat and ranger's are supposed to be a good boat and pretty quick. i don't think oday ever used a metal slotted rubrail so that would have been a good clue.
