Oday fuel tanks

This may be of interest to those who own a mid 1970 to 1980 boat with a steel inboard fuel tank. Check the bottom of the tank for corrosion in some cases this means you have to remove a small bulkhead but its worth while. I own a 1978 oday 30 and while cleaning under the tank my fingers went through the bottom of the tank, 10 gals. of fuel in the bilge and two days to clean up, the tank took two days to remove as it had to be cut in half to allow it to pass through the cockpit locker opening. I guess oday did not think of that one when they installed the tank.

Good advice

Many tanks in older boats, even those that are stainless, are prone to rusting through. Pinhole leaks can develop, especially if the tank is low enough in the bile to come in contact with salt water. Thanks for the heads up! Trevor

internal corrosion

Metal fuel tanks regardless of the material will corrode from the outside and the INSIDE. Small amounts of water/condensate will accumulate in the bottom of the tank and, over time, will corrode a tank from the inside. Attention to this detail is vital. Come to think of it I haven't looked at mine in a couple of years. Thanks for the reminder. Regards, Mike
