The cable controlling the centerboard broke last year. The cable broke in the middle. In a couple of months when the boat gets lifted I would like to replace it. Does anybody have a suggestion how to remove the old cable from the centerboard and install a new one? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Joe - My O'day 23 is a 1972 model. The broken cable is the braided stainless steel cable which raises and lowers the centerboard. I have a replacement cable. I'll try Rudy to see if he has a suggestion about attaching it to the centerboard. I don't have a lot of faith in him because a few years ago I tried to contact him about new stanchions for my boat but he never answered the phone or returned my calls. Thanks for the suggestion. paul

Paul, Most of the time Rudy is by himself when wife Debbie isn't working in the office. He gets so many calls during the day, he's like a chicken with his head cut off. I asked him one day if he put a block on my email and he said, "go on my PC in the office and check my emails." He had 100s of emails that continued to come in as I was checking out his PC. If he didn't get back to you, I'm sure it wasn't intentional. It may have just slipped his mind, or he got side-tracked and didn't write out a reminder to get back to you. With that said; it may be advisable for you to check the movement of the centerboard to make sure that it works freely, if you haven't done so already. O'Day 23s built before 1974, had cast iron keels that were troublesome, from what I've been told. After 1974 they used lead keels and fiberglass centerboards. At any rate, I hope that I was able to be of some help. Good luck! Joe

I ordered a new center board pendant from Rudy at D&R. It is just a braided line with a shackle spliced to it. Cost $37.38 including tax and freight. Carefully tape the end of the new pendant to the broken end of the old pendant. Pull the new pendant up thru the pipe. hook the shackle to the center board. Trick is to get the boat up in the air. I know quite a few people on this site have had no luck with Rudy at D@R but I find that if you call him he calls back. DO NOT expect him to respond to an email I hear it just will not happen.I called saturday and Debbie said he was gone for the day and he would call Monday. Well he did ,we had a quick conversation and today as I got home from work UPS was just leaving my house.Can you get better than that. Call him it works for me!!!!

The pendant is attached to a clevis. You have to drill a hole in the c/b to pin the clevis to the c/b. I had a lot of trouble fishing the new pendant thru the tube on my O'day 25. There is a bottleneck in the tube in the bilge. I ended up cutting a wedge shaped access in the tube to unjam the messenger line and pendant. good luck

Gene - Thanks for the info. I won't have a problem with the tube on the 23 because it goes straight. I'm wondering about drilling a hole in the centerboard: This would allow water to get into the center of the centerboard. Is the idea to fill the hole with epoxy or is the centerboard solid fibreglass? Paul
