Good morning, I need some help with my Oday 28.5 with an atomic diesel model 5411, 12 hp. Raw water cooled so no heat exchanger on this model. My red lite on the instrument cluster starts flashing and when the duagevreads 2 bars I see steam and or smoking coming out of the exhaust, I think about 2000 RPM. At 1500 Rpm no overheating or Red lite on! The faster I go the higher the temp gauge goes! I changed the temp sender and impeller I ran the engine. Does anyone know where the sender is located for the red overheating lite on cluster is located? The mixing elbow looks like new from the outside! I'm concerned mostly about the smoke coming out the exhaust with the water and the water kinda spitting out!! not a smooth flow!

I'm assuming you are new to this engine.
The 5411 doesn't pump exhaust water continuously like most others. It is supposed to 'spit' and the smoke you see is likely steam.
If it really is running hotter than normal, start by replacing the thermostat or at least checking the existing one to see what type it is and if it's opening at the correct temp.

if thermo stat is bad your engine will run 10 to 20 degrees hotter and this may be enough to trip your overheat alarm sensor on the block at higher RPMs as you have noticed. rx replace thermostat and check that your raw water pump is not leaking from a bad seal which would reduce the cooling h 2 0 flow (and give you a wet bilge...)

Thank you for your information! I didn't know that the engine had a thermostat? Where would that be located?
The water pump is sealed perfectly not a drop of water coming out. Also the temp gauge doesn't hardly move if I am traveling @ 1000 rpm for 30 minutes it's when I increase it to 1500 rom it moved up to 150 degrees. Once the impeller brass bushing separated from the impeller and the temp went up to 220! So the gauge is working but not accurately maybe

Thank you for your quick reply! I took apart the thermostat housing and found no thermostat!! Also they installed a 1/4 inch hose barb coming out of the thermostat housing at 3 o'clock then creating a loop going back into the 5/8! hose coming out of the top of the thermostat via a t fitting 5 inches Above then 5/8 hose continues to the vented loop.

I don't think that 1/4 hose barb contraption Is from the factory? Your thoughts on that please! Thank you
