O'day 39 rudder removal

Hi,the rudder lower bearing of my 39 is worn. I never removed a rudder ever and don't feel comfortable doing it ( but budget doesn't allow me the luxury of having it done by boatyard) . Did any of you ever done it on a 39 and can you tell me how to do it?many many thanks.Bernard s/v LadyLay

rudder removal

Not sure how different a 34 is from a 39, but---I took mine out last fall, did some work on it and put it back in this spring.1: undo cables from quadrant2: undo 3/8 bolt that goes thru shaft & tube3: when out of the water, pick up the stern high enough to let it drop out, rudder + shaft about 6 ft.A little working from ground level & it should fall right out. Mine shaft was bent, got it straightened and all fine now. Probably a 3 person job, rudder fairly heavy and you need to be inside.Good luck
