Oday 39 Cape Coral
Hi, I have a project O'day 39. The thing is, one of the part I'm stuck on is stemhead plate. Mine is damaged, the front pease is gone I'm on the tight budget and don't want to buy the new one ($1800 at DR marine) so I'm trying to fix this one. Does anybody can help me out on giving me the dimensions for the pease I'm missing? Thank you.

You are in luck. I just removed mine and had it rewelded.

Here is a picture of the wizard that welded up mine. Look familiar? click on the photo to enlarge. Note the middle divider sitting along side.

I suggest you send yours to these guys and let them repair yours. My boat is just outside their shop so they can make sure it fits properly.

Here is there website: http://aggressivemetals.net/

They are a stainless fabricator. Bow rails would be easy. They did a lot of work on my rails. As for cost, you will need to discuss that with them. The advantage you have is that they have a 39 just out side their door so they can fit it properly. I do know they have a big order coming in next month. Now is the time to talk to them.
I'm an old welder myself. Welded pressure vessels. My welds look like birdXXX compared to Neil's. I planned on doing some work myself but would be too embarrassed for them to see it. You can save money by having them dress the welds and and let you polish them.

I contacted the shop, and they told me they really don't want to deal with bow rail, and as for stemhead plate he told me to contact you directly and se if you can send me some all around pictures and dimensions. I have a local guy who is really good and he is willing to do the job, all he needs it's pictures to see how peaces should look like and dimensions. I purchased the boat with the existing damages, so I don't even know what it looks like. If you can send me all around pictures and measurements it will be a great help from your side. Thank you.

You may want to discuss your plans with the folks that view these threads. I find them a great help.
Just a year ago you could purchase and Oday 39 for under $28,000 that could be sailed away, sails, accessories gear etc. Not in pristine condition but nothing to be ashamed of.
Joe (25 years later) and myself may never re-coop our labor and possibly the cost of rebuilding our boats. It's more a labor of love.
Are you in this same boat? If so , you will find a lot of help here on this site but please pause a moment before you get too deep. You may find that parting the boat out may be your best alternative.

Best of luck with your project what ever direction it leads.

I'll look for your photo soon.

I purchased this O'day 39 about 1 year ago, I don't have big budget, so it will take me some time till she is going to be ready to sail. I really hate to part this boat out, I want to give her a second chance. It is for me a labour of love, and I know I won't ever get my money back, what I'm going to spend, but I'm in it not to make money :)
My friends thinks I'm crazy. I'm considering myself younger generation of sailors, but on my weekends, I much rather spend my time dripping sweat and blood on the deck, working on her, when go to the bars and partys :)
I will take all around pictures of the plate and send it to you asap. Thank you. Any wisdom of advise or any pointers, or tips on what I should do or not to do, will be greatly appreciated.

OK , let's gets go.. First thing you will need is the serial number of the boat and what type of keel connection it has. Early version has a shallow bilge and the keel fits into a rectangular socket. Later version has a deep bilge and a flat joint.
Once I know this I can hook you up with someone that has a similar boat.
We also have a guru that is an original owner. You will want to consult with him on as to rigging, sails and such. He is sailing to England now. Hope to hear from him soon. (crappy cell coverage in the mid Atlantic)

Hello vytkis. I can personally attest to the difficulties involved in a complete restoration. Bank rules all. No matter how well thought out these things will require massive amounts of money depending on two things. What must be done and what you would like done. I went berserk and my costs are approaching 20,000 for my 27. It was worth every penny to me. Are you really ready to dive in both feet? If so you will find volumes of information here that address just about everything. Are you ready for the unexpected things that always pop up? These are where a project of this magnitude come apart. It is easy to wonder what in hell did I get myself into. Am I willing to commit the time? What other responsibilities do I have? I have a patient wife who was willing to allow me to go for it. About 2 hours per night for almost 2 years plus weekends. If you can answer yes then you are ready. I personally saw many a restoration project abandonded and dreams destroyed at a marina I worked at years ago. It is truly a sobering decision but when the end is in sight a feeling unlike anything you can imagine. If you're good to go we at Odayowners are ready to assist. We are all fairly obsessive about these exceptional boats.

Hi 25yarslater,
I start realizing ho much time, work and money it takes to do this restoration, but I'm ready to jump in it. unfortunately I didn't found my second half who is so supportive like your wife yet :) but this boat is my wife, so do speak :)) every spare time I have goes to the boat, and I love it. I can't wait for the day I will pop open the sampan when she is going to be done. This will be my baby, but I'm not willing to stop with her. My father use to have a sailboat, but it was destroyed by one of the hurricanes years ago. It broke his hart. My plan is, after I finish her to give it to my father. He has no idea I'm planning this, but nothing will make me more happy then surprise my dad like this. After I'm done with this project I'm planning to save some money and get another one for me, and do it all over again. I know you probably think I'm crazy :)

Not at all crazy. Have you checked your deck core? That is a must as most of these older boats have had leaks that will need tending to. A rotted core that has delaminated isn't the end of the world. It is actually time consuming but fairly simple to replace or repair. Replaced mine completely. Fall on my deck and you're risking a busted knee. When you are ready the gang here has a library full of knowledge about virtually every problem you can encounter and can offer you multiple solutions to them. The hard part will be choosing the right one for your situation. And for crying out loud keep photos and info coming. This helps others in our community add to our knowledge base. Welcome aboard.

This is what I achieved so far.
Purchased O'day 39 in Louisiana, moved here to Florida, with motor, mast is down. Striped everything from deck and mast. Replaced some of the port hatches, replaced side windows, in the process of replacing main hatches, in the process of repairing all the gel coat and non-skid on the deck. repairing toe and rub rails, rails was removed and repaired in the shop. was damaged and was in really bad shape. making some new station bases, some was missing some was damaged to much to repair. winches are in bad shape, I'm taking them apart and sending to get new chrome done. I'm planning to be done with the deck in two month, then I will do the bottom job and I need to straighten the rudder, it got bent on the way to Florida. After this I will be spending all my savings for new electronics and sails and rigging. I'm thinking to change captains desk to. It looks like the space was wasted and I want to make more out of it. I need to clean water and fuel tanks, change head, change all the lights to lid. And the list goes on and on, this is just what I can think from the top of my head.

The water, holding and fuel tanks are mounted on plywood. It's likely rotted. You may want to remove them to make cleaning easier and to replace the plywood.
Don't be thinking electronics. You may be able to use your cell phone by the time you get everything ready to sail. (That's what I am hoping for!

I'm with 25yearslater on the electronics discussion. You can spend a fortune on this stuff and it isn't all that useful. A depth sounder is a pretty important item, a hand held GPS will give you location and speed over ground. Wind speed and direction to me are very discretionary items. You can see where the wind is coming from by observation, a windex may be useful for a lot less $ than an electronic wind direction installation. Wind speed comes with feel and observation of the waves. Experience to me is more important than having some digital readout. Learn how to navigate properly and an inexpensive handheld GPS that gives current position, a compass, and depth should be adequate.
