I just purchased an 84 Oday 39. The mast step is a resign reinforced plywood step. The step is delaminating and deteriorating, it needs to be replaced. I am pondering getting a step machined of metal instead of fabricating a new one of wood. Has anyone run acroos this or have any thoughts on the subject?

Mast Step

Bob - Replacing the mast step with metal is a common thing in both the Tanzer and Pearson circles. As long as the dimmensions match there is no reason not to do it - but why not just epoxy and laminate another wooden step? I'd think it could be done for less scratch. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

I'll bet that this is a center bd version!

You did'nt say if it was a ctr. brd version or not. but from what you describe it probably is. I had the same problem wmy 30. Read my review of the O'day 30. I gave some detailed info on how I fixed it. I'm not sure that just sitting a metal plate on top would do the trick. I'm not sure there's enough space to do this. also this method of fixing, would set the mast higher than it was orig. and would nessitate cutting it to keep it at the same elevation. Also I don't think there would be enough room to slide the plate in under the sole to get to the edges and also would put a huge point load on the edges. If you have any questions e-mail me at the owners directory. I'd be happy to help in any way I can. Capn Jim

mast step

I have an O'Day 39 which until 5 years ago was a salt water boat. My metal mast step is now corroded to the point that it needs replacing. My thought was to replace the corroded metal step with glassed in wood. I would be interested in what you decide and if you decide to have one fabricated who fabricated it. Mark Clark
