I am looking at a 1984 Osay 37 and would like some input from Oday owners. Is there any items that I should for during my review ot the boat? Current boat is a Cal 29. Thanks.

Used-boat review

Bill: John Kretschmer did a used-boat review of the ODay 37 in the June 2004 issue of Sailing magazine. He gave it pretty good reviews overall. You can order a back-issue copy by going to: http://sailingmagazine.net/orderissue.html At last year's owners' rOnDAYvous in Connecticut, one of the attendees was the skipper of a 37 who has sailed it all over the place, including lots of bluewater miles. Guess that should say something about how tough and capable this boat is. (And he showed up at the rOnDAYvous with a crew of 6, which should say something about how spacious and/or comfortable it is.) Pete s/v EmmieLou (ODay 322) Little Silver, NJ

did an extensive Used Boat review of the 37 some years ago. I have a copy of it around here somwhere and would be happy to send it to you. The review was most favorable. I believe '84 was the next to last year, though I understand the molds went to South American and they continued to build them there until about 1990. Some boats built in 1979-80 had iron keels. Avoid. The stem fitting is aluminum and can be a problem. Check it carefully for cracks. I can't think of anything else possibly negative other than overall condition, like, original sails? The boat is 22 years old and how good it is depends on how well she was maintained as well as how well her old original equipment was upgraded to newer. Welcome to the club. We have made many modifications to ours and I'll be happy to discuss them with you.

Peter: Last year's rOnDAYvous was held at Captain's Cove Seaport in Black Rock Harbor, CT. This year's event is scheduled for the weekend of July 14-16 at the Raritan YC in Perth Amboy, NJ. Here's the current thread on odayowners.com: http://www.sailboatowners.com/forums/pviewall.tpl?fno=62&uid=F&SKU=2006008111619.77 You're not all that far away. Hell, we have boats coming in from New London, CT, and upstate NY. Why not join the party? Let me know if I should add you to the email list of prospective (or actual) attendees. The 37 is a fine boat. Look for soft decks around the forepeak and find out if it has iron or lead keel (lead good, iron bad). Not much you can't fix yourself. It's alot of boat for the price. It can run with most cruising 37ft boats.
