A previous owner removed the holding tanks from both heads in our 1982 O'Day 37. He installed a Lectrasan on the aft head but left the forward one direct connected to the outside.

The Lectrasan was fine. But then places started getting picky and now we have all of Long Island Sound and lots more besides designated as no-discharge zones. That includes the Lectrasan.

I need to reinstall holding tanks on my boat. But I have no idea how these things are set up in this boat. Does anyone have a diagram?

Peter,
Go to this link and get a tank that will fit in the location of the old one's take the hose from the thru hull and put it onto the tank and the tank vent to the hull vent (I'm sure there was a vent if there was a tank)

holding tanks

Peter,

I have the original owners manual for my 1985 O'Day 37 and I am sure it has a drawing of the boat layout. It is on the boat and I will get it the when I go to the boat in a couple of weeks. You can ckeck to see if the aft holding tank is there by opening the drop down door in the aft head and the tank should be to the left of the opening. You can access the top of the tank from the starboard cockpit locker. In the right side of the locker there is a removable box. The forward holding tank on my boat is under the forward part of the port settee in the main cabin.

Hope this helps and when I get the layout drawings I will let you know and can fax or e-mail you a copy

holding tank

Peter,

I said that the aft holding tank was to the to the right when you looked thru the drop down door in aft head and it is to the left not the right. I am going to the boat today and will get the owners manual and take pictures of where the tanks are. I will try and scan the owners manual and if there is a way to post it so you or anyone can download it.

Many thanks to all for your useful information. I have a manual for the boat but it got wet and is not legible. I don't recall seeing in the manual anything about the holding tanks. The aft head has the Lectrasan attached and will stay that way. The Lectrasan is under the berth and easily accessible. I also have a Raritan form-fitting 5 gallon tank that I can install to meet the letter of the law. But it would be nice to know what the original installation was.

Peter, the forward holding tank on my 82 oday 37cc is also located under the port setee. If your boat was originally fitted with a forward holding tank there should be a pumpout fitting and a 1 1/2" thru hull for the sea pump out. My tank is rectangular, holds about 15 gallons, and sets on a fiberglass/plywood support that is glassed to the hull. There are two straps that secure the tank to the support. Just forward of the tank is a Whale manual pump and forward of the pump is the thru hull for overboard pump out. You could install a tank under the v-berth, but I think under the setee is more convenient, especially if you go with a manual pump out system. If you only plan on dockside pumpouts, then the v-berth would be ok and it would be easier to route the air vent. Pat

Pat,

Would it be possible to post a photo of your forward holding tank setup? The boat has deckplates labelled "Waste," one to port forward of the forward head (Number One Head) and one to starboard at the aft end of the cockpit (Number Two Head -- Lectrasan). But I am damned if I can find vents. The water tanks and fuel tank have vents but not the waste setup.

Hauled yesterday (sniff!) so I have all winter to contemplate the problem. Look at the prop. No wonder she was smoking at low RPMs.

Peter,

I will be back at the boat in Dec. and will post a pic of the forward holding tank setup. Your waste pump out access plate is in the same place as mine. Is there a hose connected to it and if so, where does it go?

The vent hose runs aft behind the stove and into the port cockpit locker. It is connected to a small bronze air vent located beside the same type water tank air vent. I removed that vent line and ran a new one forward using pvc and flexible hose. Pat

Just got around to reading your helpful post. Don't think I would want the holding tank vent to be next to the fresh water tank vent. Those deckplates labelled "Waste" do not connect to anything now. Previous owner removed the connections. Was talking to a broker yesterday about the problem. His advice was to leave it to the next buyer rather than fix it myself.
