Has anyone ever replaced the main self tailing winch on an Oday 34 or 35? Im looking into what size and brand came with the boat originally but i cant see any markings on it. Mine is cracked and needs to be replaced. Thanks!

Just measure the base circumference with a soft tape if the winch is still on the boat, that will give you an accurate base diameter, probably a Lewmar size 40 or Harken 35 will work well on that boat

Replacing a winch is a common task for all boats, including the Oday brand. It is like replacing tires on a car.
A picture would likely help some of us older sailors to identify the brand you have on your boat.
Like tires, there are a group of manufactures that product the hardware then sell it to boat owners or boat manufacturers.
Depending on the age of your boat he manufacturer may be out of business.
@Dave Groshong has provided info about two of the better known manufacturers Lewmar and Harken. You can source your needs with him. Using the SBO Shop helps to maintain this fabulous website.
Alternatively, older winches made by Barient or Barlow (who were prominent in the 60's through the 80's) made winches that are still in use today. Certain internal parts can be found from sources like Lewmar.
I am not familiar with the O 34.
On my O’Day 322, the primaries are in a little inset, which limits the size of the winch base. I found some abandoned Barlow 27’s that needed some real love…
And mounted them on the coaming for the primaries. I moved the Barlow 23’s from the coaming to the cabin top for halyard winches…replacing the Lewmar 16 and small Barlow (19 I think). Having 2-speed halyard winches makes things much nicer. The larger primaries are a real treat.

Thanks for the replies so far. The winch that needs replacement or repair is a Barlow 24 ST. The top jaw is broken, other than that it works just fine. Has anyone ever been able to find replacement parts for them?

Only site I know that offers parts for the Barient and Barlow winches.
Other than that you may find winches on eBay or in some resale sites where yards have removed hardware and offered it up like a consignment shop.
