I have a 1981 O'day 34 with standard winches that I'm thinking of upgrading to self-tailers. Has anyone done this? I'm looking for suggestions as to which brand and model might fit. Horror stories about what's under my winches and what's holding them on etc.

I know some later model O'day 34's had self tailers, can anyone tell me what brand and model they are?

What's there now?

Have you considered Winchers, first, before you invest big $$$?

Basic choice is Lewmar (very popular) and Harken. $$ is an issue. Lewmar will most likely fit your bill. Size them based on Lewmar's website. Then, if you have a huge genoa, go up one size if your pocketbook can handle it. :)

I agree with the horror under the winches. No backer plates? Mine are just through bolted with rinky dink washers. I just made backer plates from 1/4" aluminum. I made a pattern with a piece of cardboard and pressed it onto the bolts from the underside to make an impression into the cardboard. That worked really well. Anyone out there have an opinion about using butyl for bedding winches?

I replaced my OEM Barient 21's with Harken series 40 two speed self tail and made some back plates to replace the weenie washers Oday used......I bought the Harkens cause they had a promotion where they gave a hefty rebate for your old winches and the rebate was determined on the size of winch purchase so I sent my old small mast winches off my old Bristol 24 and still have the Barient 21's that seem to fetch a lot of money on EBay
