I have a 1981 O'Day 34, and the traveler only allows you to make adjustments when there is no load on the main sail. It basically has 2 stop blocks that you have to move by hand, so it can't be done if the car is pressing against it.
Has anyone upgraded this system to a more advanced traveler with pulleys?
I'm curious how it worked and how you routed the lines. I have only 1 smallish winch on the cabin top, It seems like I'd need one on each side for the traveler lines.

You don't use or need the winches for the traveler control lines. The winches are generally on the cabintop for halyards and the mainsheet.

Check out Garhauer, they have a very nice 6:1 traveler assembly and will work with you to route lines and modify the cars to suit your boat, i.e., like for your dodger.

Give them a call after you check out their website. They are very helpful, and most likely know a lot about your boat, things you may not have thought of.
