I have an O'Day 35. It is essentially a 34 with a swim platform. I have replaced the rudder on mine and had to become very familar with the inside of the rudder tube. There is no bearing as such. It is just a fiberglass tube. Mine has a grease fitting about 6" below the top and about 8" above the bottom. I give it a couple of pumps with a grease gun once a year. This makes it move freely. If the squeeking is near the end of travel you may need to check the rudder stops on the steering quadrant. I have rubber hose over my stops to reduce impact and rubbing metal on wood.

By the way with this boat the Catalina 34 is very similar from an engine and engine panel perspective. Great Site - www.c34.org

I also have an oday 35. I was considering taking my rudder off so I could do some fiberglass work on it at home. It looks like it might be pretty involved so I am planning to do the work as it hangs on the boat. It looks like the quadrant needs to be loosened and the through bolt needs to come out. Would anyone else agee?
