Hi all,

How do these boats really sail? I read on these pages that a chap has one in Helsinki or russia someplace. Was the boat sailed over there?
Anyone know much about the prelevence of osmossis in O'day 32 hulls?

Hello from a very happy 32 owner
the boat that ended up in Helsinki was put on a freighter in the great lakes then after some work it was sailed to Moscow, Russia, I was in contact with the fellow but maybe the KGB got him cause the last time he posted he was in Moscow
"prelevence of osmossis in O'day 32 hulls?" never heard such a thing
my boat has been a work in progress for the last 8 years and its now at a point where I could do some long term cruising with it and be very comfortable, could I do this long cruise in blue water? I wouldn't.... but for in shore cruising it's a great boat.....it sails well but your not going to win any race's
keep in touch if you want more info

I can't believe my eyes. Osmosis is ultraviolite degredation of the gelcoat. Depending on how one takes care of their boat the this process is either curbed or accelerated. If you keep your gelcoat clean and shiny and wax it regularly so the sun chews on the wax instead of the gelcoat, then your hull will last a long time. If you don't then it will degrade, regardless of the boat make. O'Day 32's sail fine. Not sure what generation you speak of, but they are not considered race boats, but cruisers. But they sail fine. The earlier 32's were a C. Raymond Hunt design. The later ones were built by Lear Ziegler (sp?) with a different designers. I have been on both.

Hi from one more happy 32 owner from Moscow! :) I may confirm that O'Day 32 is not a high-speed boat, but it's an unsurpassed 32 feet cruiser.
I found some osmosis blisters on the bottom of my O'Day, but all these were not critical and I could fixed these with a grinding mashine and 5 coats of epoxy primer Gelshield 200 (it's called Interprotect 200 in USA). I spent a few days for that, but I fully fixed osmosis and don't have this problem now (my boat on the water every year). You may find some photos here:

Hi guys,
Osmossis is what I call hull "blisters" caused by water penetration into the fibreglass layup. Anyways, thanks Konstantin for the helpfull pictures and advice. I saw a 32 cc for sale in virginia, the chap said he took it to Bermuda and then BVI's. Any of you guys thinking that this type of trip is exceptional for the 32 cc's designed stability, hull construction etc? Obvious;ly chainplates and rigging can be beefed up, what might be some other considerations? Why the reluctance to head offshore?
Thanks for the input.

To be truthful this boat doesn't has a really strong hull. We observed some hull deformations during our trip under a quite strong wind (about 30 knots). And it's not a real keel boat, the draught of this boat is only 1 m.

Wow, the hull deformations sound a bit scary. I'll be looking at a different design for my cruising goals.

Thanks a ton.

The O'Day 322, 302 and 272 were all designed by C Raymond Hunt Assoc. of Boston.....I believe a company called Grumin Design did the focus groups in Boston Harbor which is where the light grey was chosen....

My English is not good. These were not permanent deformations. I mean some 1-2 cm fluctuation of the hull.

Hi RAD! I'm not interesting for KGB, but I had crazy troubles with our customs. Luckily it's in the past now. I'm really happy with my O'Day 32 and I'm going to make it better with new engine, diesel stove, air heater and other useful devices.

Boats are classified as inland, coastal or off shore. If you are sailing on inland waters, or coastal cruising, you don't need a boat built for the North Sea, so an O'Day 32 might be a great boat for you.

Are we talking about the 32 or the later 322. I thought the later 322 where supposed to be a fast boat. I have the 222 and if I were to replace it would be with a 302 or 322.

My 222 isn't the fastest boat out there but I would say its in the 90 percentile. I guess depends on boat and sail area. Can't wait to put on a 135% jib and really fly. I had this boat already on the rails and felt very comfortable with it.
