Both boats from the '70s -- I'm considering a purchase -- any insight as to which would be the better bet, presuming similar condition, equipment, etc. would be appreciated.

Purpose?? Love my P323

We have owned a pearson 323 for four years. 3 years on the gulf coast 1 year on a lake. The boat has performed well but the SA /displacement is rather low so she isn't very fast in light winds. We've been in some 6-8' waves with no problems and even some 12-15' waves coming into inlets. No problems. Even in the steep chop of Mobile bay the cockpit is usually dry and we've never had stuff coming over the stern...We do have a dodger. Check the mast step and the condition of the volvo MD11C. Our mast step is rusted adn wil be replaced soon. The volvo is the second one as the original died and was replaced by the PO with a MD11C from a saildrive boat that had sank. We've hd no problems except the engine overheating and the prop shaft had to be replaced. We think that the shaft alignment was off when the engine was replaced.

I dont know much about O`days but Ive owned 2 pearsons of 70`s vintage one for 15 years one for 7 years They are good sailors. The boats are virtually bullet proof. Do the proper maintenence and they will last indefinitely Bob Fox 1975 P26W #76 Whitecap Marblehead MA

Pearson are good quality boats

and the O'Days are ok. I think you would be better off with the aft cockpit vs the the center on the O'Day. For one thing it is easier to dock.

I had my 79 ODay 30 for 20 years and sold it for more than I paid for it. It was a solid seaworthy boat. It had blister issues I fixed before I sold but you can check that beofre you buy. A week after I sold it the new owner (or his friends) ran it aground on the beach in a blow. It was a good sailor and took me many places. You can still find most parts . Oday also has a good following on the web of ODay owners. I like Pearsons but my vote would be the Oday 32 for the added room and tha aft cabin. I had an original Yanmar Q2m15 and it ran and ran and Ran.

Funny when I was looking for a new boat I was looking for a 30+ Pearson or a Catalina 30 and ended up finding my 32 ODay and I love it, the only reason I went with the ODay was the shoal draft feature. Both the 32 Oday and the 323 Pearson are good boats and I would do a list of pros and cons for each and see how the list ends up. BTW I can dock my 32 just as easy as an aft cockpit

RE:blister issues

I had a friends that had blister issues with his O'Day too. If you looking at an O'Day check out a late model 35. This is a very nice boat! Cost a little more but you will not be sorry!

They're both well made boats.

Folks who have them love them. Choose the cabin arrangement you like best. Centre cockpit boats are just as easy to dock as aft cockpit boats. The big difference between centre cockpit and aft cockpit is privacy in the aft cabin and a smaller salon/galley. Centre cockpit is also easier to have a good full enclosure over the cockpit. I helped some friends bring home their new (to them) O'day 37 from Sydney to Gabriola Island in January. It has a full enclosure. We sailed onto 25-30 knots the first day, 135 roller furling jib. No Main. It was rough but warm and dry in the enclosed cockpit. Great sail. Would have been miserable with just a dodger. If you have kids or plan to cruise with friends and you hope for romance when cruising, go for the aft cockpit. If it's just the two of you, or you don't find sailing romantic, aft cockpit and more room in the cabin may be the best choice.

I used to own...

an OdayCC32 and we used the boat as a family and on vacations for about 5 years. We loved the boat and the center cockpit is easy to handle and the separate aft double was nice for our privacy while we stashed the kids up front. We had a full cockpit enclosure made so we could go between cabins in any weather which was a great help. I had to replace the engine in mine as I blew a cylinder...but I wouldn't consider that a flaw in the boat. We did have to make a small repair on some foredeck delam so that is worth looking at. Other than that, she was fun to sail and had tons more room than any other 32 made of that era and was decently built. The pearsons are good boats too but if you are family cruising then I'd certainly recommend the O'day.

In the mood for a road trip?

Why not drive up to Milford, CT, on the weekend of July 13-15? You can see RAD's O'day 32CC (and nearly 2 dozen other O'days) up close and personal, at the 5th annual O'day owners rOnDAYvous. Let me know if you want me to email additional info. Pete s/v EmmieLou (Oday 322) Little Silver, NJ
