Does anyone have any info on upgrading the engine on an O'Day 31? The current engine is a 14HP Universal. I am considereing the purchase of this model but would like to know about going to a bigger engine later. Thanks in advance.

New Engine

I put a Yanmar 2GM20 in a 1983 O'Day28 for about $6K. The previous engine was an 11 HP Universal, so I gotta believe a 2GM20 (18HP) would fit in your boat too. Good Luck

did you do it yourself

Chuck...did you install the Yanmar yourself?? I'm thinking about repowering my 28 next year. I got a quote for the same engine but it was $10,000. (including installation)

I did install it and saved a few thousand. I bought the engine at the winter boat show for about $5400 I think. You'll need a new prop and exhaust system too. It wasn't that difficult to do. I set up a chain fall over the side of the boat with 4X4's. I got a lot of help from the engine dealer over the phone and he loaned me his installation manual. He activated the warranty from the pictures I E-mailed him. This was done in the spring of 2002, so the price might have gone up a bit but not that much.

On the 31, I'd look hard at the Universal M3-20B. 3cylinder, small 260#. The prop from your 14 should be nearly correct. The Yanmar 2GM is no longer available and this Universal is a smother replacement. Pat McCartin Inland Marine Diesel imd_ga@hotmail.com
