Oday 28's-- difference in model years

Am looking at possibly buying an '82 Oday 28. Have read some sterling reviews of the '83 model and was wondering what the differences in the model years might be, if any. I am just starting this so, from quick review of this site, I believe there are different keel/cb models. The one I am looking at is keel only, and the owner says "iron keel," if that narrows anything down. The boat looks clean but I was particularly taken by one owner's writing about how the main shrouds went to glass only. Having almost bought an older C&C that ended up having some early rot in its bulkheads where the chainplates went I am now sensitized to that issue. So I'd ask whether the '82 28's had the glass only insertions. Will likely need to replace the diesel and was also wondering if anyone knew of places I could find a refurbed or used one. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks Steve

Great Boat

Steve, The O'28 is a great sailing boat and is also very comfortable down below. O'Day did a really good job of improving the original through out its'entire production run,'79/'86. I have an '85 with a very well taken care of '84, two boats down the dock from me. Even this late into the production, there are many differences between the two. I have a 3'8" shoal keel where as they only came with a fin or centerboard before that. Mine, anchor roller, theirs, not. Basically the overall look and the dimensionsions are the same; just nice little upgrades as they went on. My shrouds have the Navtec system that has a turnbuckle under the deck and attaches directly to the hull aft of the main bulkhead. We have sailed her pretty hard with no trouble and have never found any questionable construction techniques on either of our O'Days(also had a 25). I don't know about the iron keel, but there must be somthing to it as it is a question when you go to the sail loft on this site and start to build a new sail. I would probably stay away from the iron keel, but everything else about the boat is great! PM

appreciate reply

Thanks, Paul. Good info. The last boat I almost bought had the dreaded water-down-the-chainplates disease leading to early rot in the bulkheads-- so I'd be glad to see something going directly to glass. Didn't get a chance to check that on first inspection and I'll look if I get there again-- though it sounds, from what you've written, that it'll likely be something on later models than the '83. Again, thanks Steve
