I have an OD 28 with a Universal 5416 Diesel. This is the first time that I have winterized engine as my new marina for winter store does not offer that service.

My first quesiton is regarding oil change. The manual says to pump out through dipstick ... BUT, I cannot find the dipstick. The manual says it's located on Port behind alternator. It's very hard to see back there or even feel. Any pointers on locating?

Second question - there is a hose coming off bottom of oilpan with plug. The paper attached says this is for draining oil. Before removing plug, I tried to position hose to see where I could drain into a pan, but it seemed like it would always be above the point where it is connected to the oilpan. Any pointers?

Would appreciate any help as winter is closing in.

Hello,

i have an O35 with a different engine, so I can't help you with the dip stick location.

For the oil change, as you saw, it's not really possible to position the hose low enough to let the oil drain out. That's why the owner's manual states to suck the oil out of the dipstick.

Maybe some of the pictures posted on the Marine Diesel Direct page will help:

On my O'day the dipstick is located on the starboard side, about half way back, near the throttle linkage.

Anyway, I use a BIGBOY oil changer that I bought from WestMArine

It's pretty easy to use.

Lastly, don't forget that you need to winterize the seawater part of the engine cooling system.

Good luck,
Barry

Yes, review the photos as suggested on that site.

To use the oil pan drain hose, you need a pump. I use a manual Jabsco "Little Handy Boy" pump and have installed a threaded fitting on the end of the pump hose to mate with the oil drain hose screw.
