I've been going over the sphagettii wiring of my "customized" 28 with an 9.9 outboard. What I have found is the 8 gauge wire used to ground the mast and rigging is disconnected at the missing saildrive motor. This means there is no grounding to the water anymore. The yard that did this for the original owner could have at least bolted them all together. I guess I will try to terminate them to the rudder post some how. Thought this might help other odays with outboards.

It would be an extra step and expense but there is a device called a grounding shoe for boats to lessen the effects of lightening strikes. You'd have to put a hole in the hull but it would have the same effect as the sail drive. The shoe can be found on the internet or at marine supply stores.

I got a little scared over the 4th of July weekend and canceled our overnight when they called for thunderstorms during the night. Turns out there were none, but... Sometimes I wish they never took out the motor(hot water, better resale, grounding), but my boat is in great shape, there is alot of storage room where the engine and tank was and the boat was a steal at 4k.

How do I rig an outboard?

I have a 1978 O'Day 28 whose saildrive has decided to keep more water in the combustion chamber than fuel! If I need to strap on an outboard, do you have any pics or advice?

Thanks,

Scott

sorry, computer died

I didn't do the job, mine was removed and glassed over somewhere in Norfolk. They used an outboard bracket on the starboard side and ran the controls thru a grommet then up from the engine compartment to attach to the original controls

Thanks Marc

I am going to pull the power head and try one last time to save it. If this doesn't work, then the club will have a new piece of yard art!
