Just purchased a 1980 28 in Key Largo and it is enroute to our home in Maine. While the mast is down I need to replace the mast boot as it is a keel stepped mast and the old boot is rotten from UV. Any ideas on where a new one can be purchased? Defender catalog lists a universal one by SSI but am not sure that one would really work. Has anyone tried it or have any ideas? - Ron

Rudy

Ron- Try Rudy at D&R Marine. If you're new to the Oday family he is the guy who bought out O'day's stuff when they closed and he has lots of equipment and parts. Try the link below. In case the link doesn't work it's: drmarine.com Mike

Kenyon or Selden spar?

Ron, Do you know if you have a Kenyon or Selden spar? If Kenyon, the Kenyon spar has the complex collar arrangement for the deckhouse and the urethane collar clamps between the collar and the deckhouse. Also, the Kenyon collar will have two tabs inside the deckhouse roof with a bolt passing through the mast. The Kenyon mast (at least on my 1980 O28) is anodized in a tan finish. If it is a Kenyon, it is most likely the 4050 section (number will be cast onto the top ring of the collar). Not sure what the Selden arrangement looks like. Parts for both arrangements are found on rigrite.com. According to rigrite, the urethane collar for the Kenyon setup is no longer available, they sell a rubber wedge that fits between the collar and the mast but it is not an exact replacement. Not sure if Rudy has any NOS (New Old Stock) collars for the Kenyon mast. Great place to check as always. Best of luck, and let us know how it works out! Bob s/v Simple Dreams Chicago

Used a universal one

We used a universal mast boot purchased in Boat US and have had no problems with it. I'm not sure what type of mast we have, though. Good Luck.
